Book Arts Competition

From Seneca Falls to Philadelphia: Fourth of July 1876 and the Women of the Centennial

Call For Entries

Description The 4th of July is always a dynamic and important celebration in Philadelphia, but in 1876 the Centennial Exposition added more festivities and tensions to the occasion. To the surprise and consternation of many in Philadelphia, Susan B. Anthony and others belonging to the National Woman’s Suffrage Association presented the Declaration of Rights for Women, an activity in contrast to the dedication that day of the statue of Baron von Humboldt and the unveiling of the Catholic Temperance Fountain. As part of Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts 2013, the Athenaeum of Philadelphia and Philadelphia Center for the Book are seeking artists, through the medium of the book, to explore and respond to prints and books in the Athenaeum’s extensive collection regarding the Centennial, Susan B. Anthony, Women’s Suffrage, and the 1876 4th of July. The books created will be exhibited in the Athenaeum gallery in April - May during the Festival in a show titled From Seneca Falls to Philadelphia: Fourth of July 1876 and the Women of the Centennial. Artists are invited to attend a Salon at the Athenaeum at 219 S. 6th Street on Saturday, September 29th, from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm. At the Salon, members will view and learn about pieces in the collection and see the exhibition space. The collection items will also be available to view by appointment during regular Athenaeum hours, and a selection of the pieces will be available to view on the Athenaeum’s website, philaathenaeum.org, starting on September 29th. To read the full text of Susan B. Anthony’s Declaration, go to http://ecssba.rutgers.edu/docs/decl.html. A jury will make selections based on project proposals. The proposed books may be editioned or one of a kind artists’ books, book objects, altered books, or zines, but must be newly created work, and must directly respond to a print or book from the collection on view at the museum or posted on the Athenaeum’s website or to the concept of Susan B. Anthony, the Centennial, and the Declaration. Proposals will be judged based on evidence that the proposed book is a response to a specific Athenaeum book or print, as well as the quality of the proposed book and artist’s prior work and experience. There is no entry fee for submission. Participants must be PCB members, but anyone may become a member upon submission of the exhibit proposal. First and second monetary prizes will be awarded.
