Fans at the Athenaeum
Object ID:
Folding fontange shaped fan with single fabric pleated leaf. Metallic gauze or net leaf with silk applique is heavily embellished with floral and geometric designs of gold and silver sequins. Ivorine (imitation ivory) sticks and guards are pierced, incised, painted, and inlaid with silver pique (small inset metallic dots). The rivet has mother of pearl buttons, and very faint numbers are engraved inside the gold loop. The box indicates that this fan was made in France, and sold by Bailey Banks & Biddle, a company founded in Philadelphia in 1832 that specializes in fine jewelry and silver.
